Franz Doppler (1821-1883)
Franz Doppler was an Austrian flutist, composer, and conductor. He was born in Lemberg, Poland on October 16, 1821. His first music teacher was his father Joseph, who was an oboist and composer. Doppler made his debut in Vienna in 1834 at age 13. He became the principal flutist of the Pest Opera Orchestra in 1838, and then at the Hungarian National Theatre in 1841.
His first opera, Benyovszky, was staged at the National Theatre in 1847. Four additional Hungarian operas were staged there in the next 10 years. In 1858 he moved to Vienna and became the first flutist, assistant conductor, and later, conductor of the ballet at the court opera. He taught the flute at the Vienna Conservatory beginning in 1865. In addition to his operas he composed music for the ballet, chamber ensembles, piano, and flute. He died in Baden, near Vienna, on July 27, 1883.
